Status: 37 Weeks, 1 Day

37 weeks, 1 day

OK. There's really not a whole lot that I have to say to go with this post. I just thought I might ACTUALLY post a pic the day we took it. Novel concept, I know. We are getting ready to go pack our bags for thr hospital...and then we are going to relax! Sounds wonderful....

36 Week Update

Status: 36 weeks, 4 days
First off, here are a couple of pictures that I have been too lazy to get off the camera and post....

35 weeks, 1 day - on our way to Mitzvah Day @ CBS

36 weeks, 0 days - on my way to work

OK. So, there are the pictures I know you all were so anxiously waiting for...now for the info of the week....
Monday, I had an appointment with the Maternal-Fetal specialists for our weekly BPP. Tobe was doing great, and "weighed" in at a respectable 6 lbs 2 oz. He's now in the 57th percentile. I was much happier with this measurement than the one a month ago because I was afraid he'd get really big, but he seems to have realized that I am just not going to stretch that much and he needs to slow it down! I was also able to see my favorite doc at the practice during my visit. She's so great because she is realistic and actually understands what it's like to do my job. She even told me if the staff gives me a hard time about scheduling appointments that I should ask to talk to her!

Of course, I did get in a little trouble for not actually doing my fetal kick counts. So now I'm required to keep a log (they gave me a paper to put check marks on) and do them religiously at least once a day - although she really wants them twice a day.

I asked her about the swelling in my right leg, and she said it's normal to have more swelling on one side than the other. The only other thing that made me a little nervous was my BP was up to 130/84....seeing as how it had been a lot lower than that for 99% of this pregnancy, it made me nervous. But they didn't seem bothered by it.

Fast forward to today. We had an appointment with Libbie, one of the midwives, for a routine 36 week check-up. Tobe's heart was beating strong, my belly measure perfect, no problems with weight gain...BUT my BP was 148/88! This did not make me feel good. At the end of our check-up, Libbie checked it again and it was still 140/84. She ordered some lab work and told me to try to rest more and watch my BP when I'm at work. I'm also supposed to be on the lookout for signs/symptoms of pre-eclampsia....joy. Because we haven't had ENOUGH to deal with during the pregnancy....

The last thing I want to do is be induced, but we're game for whatever needs to happen to meet our little Tobe!

Who wants pictures????

Status: 35 weeks, 6 days

Here's what you've been waiting for! I know most of you have seen these on Facebook, but here the
y are for the rest of you!

"Tobe" and Mommy @ 34 Weeks, 0 days
on our way to our Atlanta Baby Shower!

Tobe @ 34 weeks, 2 days - what a handsome guy!

Look how long his hair has grown! It measured 1/2" this week!

And there goes his hand toward his mouth.....

I believe the proper quote for this is "Oy, not another picture!"

Watch that finger, buddy!

That's our beautiful boy!
We had another BPP this week, at 35 weeks, 2 days, but we didn't get any pictures from this visit. On Monday, he gets "weighed" again!

Last week in Tobeland.....

Status: 35 weeks, 2 days

I am obviously very behind in my blogging. So sorry. I have been sooooo tired this week, and the thought of sitting down and trying to sound remotely interesting just felt like too much to handle. So, here I am, a week later, finally updating this thing.

Unfortunately, I have to get ready for work in about 3 minutes, so this will be short and sweet, and I will add pictures later.

Last week, we had our second BPP to check on Tobe. Everything looked great....his heart rate was 135 bpm, he was moving, and practicing his breathing, and he's still a boy - we checked!

We also had a visit with one of the midwives. We saw Libbie this time. She was really happy with the amount of weight I've gained, and didn't really have much else to say.

I'll post pictures later...I promise!

Taking it one week at a time...

Status: 33 weeks, 3 days

Today I went to the perinatologist for Tobe's first weekly ultrasound to
assess his status. It is usually done as part of a biophysical profile to assess fetal well-being. We didn't have the non-stress test (NST) part of the exam, but I think we are supposed to start doing that at the midwives' office at our next appointment. I don't really know, though, I just go along with it.

Tobe scored an 8/8 - an overachiever already! He actually had one done
last week during his growth scan and scored an 8, as well. I also got to see him play with his feet and toes, and I learned that ultrasounds have become so good that they can detect even the tiniest of details - like the fact that TOBE HAS HAIR!!!!!

The fuzzy white stuff around his skull is hair!

Not that ANYONE would be surprised that he has hair..LOL! Both Joel and I sport pretty thick manes....

We also got a pic of his arm up to his face, again.....

Overall, great appointment. My BP was 98/60, and because I was complaining of occasional spots in my vision I was told to be extra careful. The doctor was worried that I might be having episodes of low blood pressure or hypoglycemia - especially right after eating (because I am apparently so efficient at processing carbs).

32 Week Pictures!

These are the pics from our 32 week, 3 day growth scan. Just for fun, the tech decided to turn on the 3-D again! Enjoy!

Prepared Childbirth: Take 4

Status: 33 weeks, 2 days

Last week (exactly a week ago) we went to our 4th of 5 classes at Kennestone. Our normal instructor was out that day, and our sub was....well, awful. She read off the slides (about medical interventions) and wanted us to "practice" positions for comfort, but didn't really give any direction. Luckily, Chante' (the instructor-in-training) was there to help us out. The worst part was that she left the lights on the whole time! We're used to class with dimmed lighting. Lucky for us, we got to leave early because we didn't need to go on the hospital tour.

The only good thing that happened was that I found out that Chante' is a doula and doesn't charge an arm and a leg. We are probably going to meet up and see if we can work something out. I would love to have her there to help us - as long as we can afford it.

32 week check-ups

Status: 33 weeks, 2 days

Last Tuesday(at 32 weeks, 3 days), we had our 32 week midwife appointment and perinatologist appointment.

Midwife stats:
Weight Gain - 19 lbs
BP - 120/80 (I have my doubts about this number)

We heard a beautiful heartbeat and all was well. We met with Mitra, again, who I have come to really like. Every time we pass her in the hallway she's says "hi", and she remembers our names (even without a chart in front of her). Very impressive for such a big practice. I did ask her about Tobe deciding to be pretty inactive when we were in Florida, but perking right up when we came home. She said it was probably due to the change in activity. I, personally, think it's just his personality. Sorry to all you Floridians who didn't get to feel him do his thing!

After we left the midwife, we went to the perinatologist. BP was only 100/58.....makes me suspicious about the one from earlier.....Tobe is still head down (yay!) and will hopefully stay that way. He is also laying exactly as I thought - head down, arms and legs to the left, butt up in my liver! I'm starting to be able to feel shapes of body parts, but not too distinctly.

This was definitely the fastest ultrasound we have ever had - he finally decided to cooperate! He is now estimated at a whopping 5 lbs 2 oz!!!! I was literally in shock. I asked the nurse practitioner about it, and she reassured me that the further along we get, the more inaccurate the estimation is. This didn't really make me feel better. I did feel good that he's growing - but jumping from the 45th percentile to the 78th in 4 weeks is a little too much for this mommy to handle!

We did get some awesome 3D face pics, and I will post them as soon as I finish updating with everything that happened last week!

Every mom deserves a good rub down!

Status: 31 weeks, 5 days

We took a class tonight entitled, "Massage for Pregnancy & Labor." OMG! We should have taken this a LOOOOONG time ago! The teacher is a massage therapist and she was amazing! She taught us about proper positioning, how to help the guys be more productive using less effort, and how to communicate what we like and don't like. She also practiced on each of us (which happened a lot since there were only 3 couples in the class). We learned the basic techniques, but we also learned some ways to put pressure on certain areas to relieve tension in others. Who would have thought that a guy pushing on your knees while you're sitting (aimed at your back) would feel good....but it does!

Another check off the prep list!

Status: 31 weeks, 4 days

I am soooooo excited! Prepping for this baby is almost like prepping for a wedding (and we're even on the same basic countdown schedule as we were last year...LOL). The only big difference is that the baby lasts more than one day!

On the big long list of things to plan for, childcare is one of the HARDEST to cover. Choosing whether or not to stay home, go back to work, or go part-time is hard enough, but then having to decide who will take care of your child just adds to the craziness! My mom had this brilliant (and don't tell her I said this, because otherwise she'll think I REALLy listen to her - j/k mom, wink, wink) idea of asking around to see if there was a stay-at-home mom (SAHM) who was looking for a little extra income that would agree to watch Tobe a few days a week. Well..... I found one!

As most of you know, I am a daily (if not, more often) visitor to TheBump.com (yes, that's one of the spinoffs from TheKnot.com). There are tons of SAHMs there, so I decided to post - just to see if anyone was interested. I found a taker!

Her name is Lauren and she is a SAHM of a 13 month old named Colin who has the MOST gorgeous eyes EVER! I kid you not, you cannot take your eyes off of his because they are so blue and sparkly! We have emailed back and forth a couple times, and decided to meet up for lunch today to discuss the situation. It is PERFECT! I don't know if I prayed hard or what, but she was sent from heaven!

She will come to our house whatever days we need, and she'll stay with Tobe for a VERY reasonable hourly rate! I just can't believe our luck! She even has a back-up plan for if her child is sick, or she can't make it. Her cousin is a SAHM near our home and would be able to helpout.....I am so grateful to have met her, and I think we will become friends - and hopefully our boys will, too!

Adding to our CD stash!

Status: 31 weeks, 4 days

I totally see how moms can get addicted to CDs! We are now the proud of owners of some more diapers from diaperswappers.com!!!!

We got 6 Kissaluvs size 0.....($60)

We also got 9 FuzziBunz size small pocket diapers (still need inserts, though).....($45)

Prepared Childbirth: Take 3!

Status: 31 weeks, 4 days

On Monday night, we had our 3rd Prepared Childbirth class @ Kennestone. This week, we reviewed transition, pushing positions, and more massage techniques (yay!). Our instructor also pulled out the birth balls. I sat on the egg. It was ok, except you can't rock from side to side so the whole balance thing was a problem. It worked REALLY well for kneeling though. I actually liked this position more than I thought I would because it made it so much easier to breathe without Tobe up in my lungs!

A view of week 31

Status: 31 weeks, 4 days

Here is my picture of the week:
31 weeks, 2 days

On my way to work, as usual. I wasn't feeling particularly large this day, but apparently it suddenly became obvious to everyone else because I got a lot of "Wow! When did you get so big?" comments.....I don't take it badly, though, because I haven't looked pregnant for most of my pregnancy.....

Learning to let go....

Status: 31 weeks, 4 days

On Saturday we took our first Intuitive Birth class with Laura from Baby Steps. We are taking this class privately because my work schedule did not permit us to take one of their regularly scheduled classes. The bonus to this is that it is very much tailored to us, and we only have to go to 4 classes instead of 6!

This week we covered nutrition & exercise, reframing birth concepts, and the beginning of labor. Our homework for the next two weeks (until we have another class) is to practice the exercises (mostly for stretching and relief of back pain), keep a food diary for a week (to monitor protein intake), practice relaxation scripts, and think about how we want to go through this experience.

I know we are taking a lot of classes, and poor Joel is probably overwhelmed, but I think that hearing a lot of the same things over and over is helping both of us to relax. Although I learned about the process of birth in nursing school, learning about giving birth yourself is a completely different thing. It takes a lot of practice to learn to trust yourself and your body and to know that you are capable of doing something that seems impossible. I really like that all of the classes we have taken so far seem to be very middle-ground. They don't preach natural or medicated births, they simply show you how to use all your resources and to make the experience of giving birth a beautiful one for your family.

Another successful appointment!

Status: 30 weeks, 6 days

We had our second meeting with the hematologist today. My bloodwork came back normal (as we expected it would). The next step is to have it drawn one more time at the end of August and meet back with the doctor to discuss postpartum testing.

We also asked him what we need to tell potential pediatricians and mohels. He told us that the baby's cord blood would be tested, and as long as it looks fine then we're all clear for the bris (we expect that it will be)!

Here's the irony of the whole thing: Joel and I were walking into the house after the appointment and he was following me up the stairs. He stops me and says, "What is THAT on your leg?" I looked at him like he was crazy. He pointed down to the back of my calf and this was staring back at me:

I didn't hit anything that I remember, and it doesn't hurt and wasn't there yesterday...go figure.....

I got some CDs!!!

Status: 30 weeks, 6 days

No, I did not buy anymore Rock-a-bye Baby CDs or some soothing music, these are a different kind of CD - cloth diapers.

Let me just stop you now before I get a million comments about how "it's SOOOOO much work" or "they leak" or whatever else you want to say. Joel and I have been thinking about doing this since an online friend of mine introduced me to the idea about 5 months ago. We did not hit our heads, and we have not "gone green" (although we ARE environmentally conscious),
this is just what we've decided to do to save money.

So back to my excitement! My friend (same one who introduced me to the idea) introduced me to Diaperswappers.com and I have spent a good part of today finally looking into purchasing from some folks on there. So far, I have talked to a couple people about their stashes (that's code f
or "stash of diapers"), but I have only made one purchase. I bought 3 Kushies AIO (All-In-One's - basically, they function like a disposable diaper, except you wash them) for $20 - including shipping!!!! They should be shipped out tomorrow and arrive in a few days.

I am also in the process of negotiations on several other kinds of diapers. I've heard (and agree) that it's best to get different kinds and then buy more of what you like. Plus, they have a great resale value so if I don't like them I can make some (or all) of my money back!

A dose of reality...

Status: 30 weeks, 5 days

We went on our hospital tour this evening. It was reassuring, scary, and exciting all at the same time! The hospital we will be delivering at is Northside Hospital in Atlanta. It is located about 5 miles from our home, and just next door to both our midwives' and our perinatologists' offices - so it's pretty convenient!

On our tour, they showed us where I'm supposed to come in when I'm in labor (and how to keep the car from getting towed), a typical labor and delivery room, where the cafeteria & 24-hour McDonald's are located, where the cashier's office and birth certificate office are, and where we get discharged. We also took a quick peek by one of the nurseries and saw a couple of newborns. This was super-cute because Joel got all excited and had this big grin on his face! I think it was yet another step that made the whole thing real for him....

30 weeks and going strong!

Status: 30 weeks, 4 days

Yesterday we had our 30 week midwife appointment. This time we met with Mitra, who we hadn't seen since our very first appointment at the beginning of our pregnancy. For some reason I had originally thought that our personalities didn't really mesh, but yesterday we had a great meeting, and I'm really happy with her! I really like all of the midwives we've met, actually.

Stats for yesterday's appointment:

Fundal height: 29 cm (a little small, should be about 30.5)

Weight gain: 16 lbs Total
Heart Rate: 153bpm
BP: 122/70

What that means, in English, is everything looks really good. We did have a few questions yesterday, and her answers were pretty helpful.

1. Why do my arms and legs have moments where they suddenly feel heavy (the same as when I've had some alcohol - and no, I have not)? Apparently, it's the fluid occluding my nerves in pretty much the same way as carpal tunnel syndrome (which I have had).

2. I get Braxton Hicks contractions, but I also get a different tight feeling. Is this normal? I need to slow down and stay off my feet more. If there are more than 4-6 in an hour (which happens) drink lots of water, put my feet up, and go pee.

3. If my water were to break at home, how long would we be allowed to wait before they would want to induce if nothing was happening? (We were asked to find this out for class.) There are two answers: A) If I am Group B Strep + , then about 6 hours. B) If I am Group B Strep -, then 10 or more hours.

Overall, a great appointment! We are now on our bi-weekly appointment schedule, so look for lots of updates!

Prepared Childbirth : Take 2

Status: 30 weeks, 3 days

Last night we had our second session of our Prepared Childbirth class. It was a lot more relaxed this week, and I think we all felt more comfortable with each other in general. The topics covered this week were: active labor, relaxation, and the use of different labor positions.

First, we reviewed what we learned about early labor from the first week's class. After that, we learned about back labor, comfort measures, and the support person's role in active labor. To make it even more real, we watched a 15 minute video of a woman who had a natural labor with an awesome support person. I think it gave the partners a lot more confidence when they could see that it actually works!

After we scared all the guys, we went on to a little bit of deep breathing and relaxation practice. We sat facing backward in a chair with a pillow, and the partners tried different back massage techniques....it was sooooooo nice! I can't wait to practice that part some more!

It was like a belly convention....

Status: 30 weeks, 0 days

Because we are taking our "regular" childbirth class at another hospital, we decided to take a one day class with one of the midwives at our practice. Although a lot of the topics covered are things we go over in our other class, I think it was beneficial.

The midwife teaching our class was Kelley Starnes - one of the ones we hadn't interacted with before. She went over the normal things - when to call, what to look for, etc., but she also answered a lot of questions specific to the practice, too. We also had a presentation from a rep from Viacord (although he actually managed to present an unbiased little seminar) and from a local pediatrician. Overall, a very good class, but honestly, I have NEVER seen that many pregnant women in one room EVER . There had to be about 25 or so......

Forgive me....

Status: 30 weeks, 0 days

I apologize that I am grouping pics, but here's what you've been missing (unless you're on Facebook, and then you've seen these already).

26 Weeks - In St. Louis

27 weeks, 1 day

28 weeks (and a couple days, I think)

30 weeks

Yes, I realize there is no 29 week pic. By the time we remembered and had the energy to take one it was the end of the week, so we didn't bother.

Learning something every day!

Status: 29 weeks, 3 days

Joel and I went to our first "Prepared Childbirth" class last night. We ended up signing up for a class at a Wellstar Kennestone Hospital instead of at Northside (where we will deliver) because of scheduling, and I was a bit nervous about that. I was worried they would focus a lot on what the hospital itself would do, but so far that seems to be on the back burner. I LOVE our teacher, she is hilarious!

Our class has 7 couples in it with various due dates from late August to late September. After an initial quiet period, we all seemed to relax and it was pretty informal and fun. We get to sit in these awesome gliders (except that they are vinyl and therefore cause me to sweat) and we got to put our feet up on birthing balls! It was nice to relax after 4 days at work. We also came into a darkened room with peaceful music on....I could have fallen asleep right there. I'm looking forward to learning more as the weeks go on (we have 4 more classes).

Last night we covered stages of labor, third trimester physical changes, signs of labor, and when to go to the hospital. I think Joel's biggest lesson was that he doesn't have to run out the door as soon as I tell him we're in labor. I think that really calmed him down a bit. Our instructor encouraged us to stay home as long as possible, and to eat, shower, and rest before going to the hospital. The partners were encouraged to distract us from timing contractions at the very beginning (at least more than an hour), and to not jingle the car keys in our faces (that was my joke) as soon as we mentioned the word contraction.

Overall, it was a fun class...looking forward to next week!

Growing and changing

Status: 28 weeks, 5 days

This has been an insanely busy week! Lots of doctors appointments, lots of house guests, a party, and working 9 days straight kind of make one get behind really quickly on blogging!

So back to last week....we had the appointment with the perinatologist on June 25th. We saw the gorgeous shots that are posted in the previous entry, and we also found out that Tobe looks absolutely perfect! They haven't found a thing wrong with him. He measured in at an estimated 2lbs 6oz. This put him in the 45th percentile for weight for his age. Joel and I were pretty happy to have such good news and to know our little boy is growing just as he should - not too big and not too small.

The next day I went in for my 28 week midwife appointment. Unfortunately, Joel wasn't able to come because I had to have thee appointment in the morning. At my 24 week glucose tolerance test, I failed by a measly 2 points, and because of this, I had to repeat the test with a fasting, 3 hour version. This had to be done first thing in the morning, so off I went at 7 am to sit for 3 1/2 hours and 4 blood draws. While I was there, I had my appointment with the midwife who found Tobe to have a strong heartbeat at 133bpm and my size was good. I was a little disappointed that I gained 5 lbs in the last 4 weeks, but I knew it would happen sometime. I am now at a total of 14 lbs. I did find out yesterday that I passed my second round of glucose testing! However, I was still advised to modify my diet and try to stay low-carb (TRY is the operative word that I got in that sentence).

I also got sick, again. This time with an upper respiratory infection. I thought it was just a cold, so I battled it for a week. When I finally went to seea doctor I found out I have bronchitis and wheezing. I'm now on albuterol and antibiotics and feeling much better, but still short of breath sometimes.

Oh yea, and Tobe's furniture came last week! I will post pics soon. His rocker is also in, so we are probably going to go pick it up today!!!!

Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Status: 27 weeks, 5 days (This is when I started writing it, I just finished today - a week later!)

We had our monthly growth scan today with the perinatologist, and it was the best ultrasound yet! The tech came in and reminded us that we still needed some good pictures of Tobe's heart and face (which we previously had none o
f) to rule out problems. I let her know that he has been consistently stubborn, but that I was still trying to be optimistic that he would cooperate today.

For the first 30 minutes or so, she looked at all his organs, his brain, etc. and determined they looked great. Then she tried to get a look at his face, and of course, he was being his usual stubborn self.

We took a break for about 5 minutes while she entered info into the computer, and I decided that I would try to squish him (by curling myself around my belly) so that he might cooperate and flip over (he really loves cuddling against my back). For some reason, it actually worked! We got some beautiful shots of his gorgeous face, saw him yawn (just like his daddy) several times, and watched him punch and kick all over the place. It was so amazing to see! Here are the pics they gave us:

It was a great brithday present for Joel, and I think it really made Tobe seem a lot more "real" to him!

My strong little man!

Status: 25 weeks, 3 days

I am so proud of my little Tobe! We (he and I) were watching (well, he was listening) his favorite show, "Deliver Me" and he started getting really jumpy. I called Joel in and had him lay with me and put his hand on my belly. Tobe gave a few light kicks, but then he kicked Joel HARD! I felt Joel's hand jump! Once he knew what he was feeling for, he got the hang of it and was able to tell when he was moving around. I am so proud of my little guy for finally giving his daddy a "High 5"!

It wouldn't be so long if I wrote more often!

Status: 25 weeks, 3 days

Of course, I have been REALLY bad about keeping my blog updated. But seeing as how I am actually still blogging at all, everyone should be proud. I am not at all known for being good at long-term journaling. However, I am supe
r proud that I am still keeping up with it, even if it is not as often as I would like.

So, here are the pics you've been missing.....

23 Weeks

24 Weeks

25 Weeks

Ok. Now that we've taken care of business, on to our update....

I'm sure most of your read my last post, which was really just a vent from what a bad day I had last week. It got a little better the next day when I went for my 24 week OB appointment. I actually got to see my regular doctor, which was awesome because a familiar face is always calming. Tobe had a beautiful strong heart rate of 142 bpm, and he was behaving and taking a nap during the doppler so we could actually find him this time!

Dr. Henke said that because of the way the practice works, I could still deliver with a midwife if I want (which I DO want - it lowers the rate of c-sections and interventions, plus they stay with you more than the docs)! I was so relieved to hear that. She also said that because they know there is a potential problem, that the OB on call will also be there, and they will have meds on standby.

On a side note...I know that 99% of you that I have talked to feel like I am being a hypochondriac. I would like to reiterate that I did not ASK for all of this. It all stemmed from the elevated MSAFP, and from my grandma not knowing what type of Von Willebrand's she has. I personally feel that I would rather be safe, than sorry. If they want to draw my blood all the time, fine. I have insurance, it's paid for. So would everyone please get off my back about me making this more than it is, because I am not! Obviously, this will not be a concern with future pregnancies, so please let me (and my husband and doctors) deal with this (and all the other things we have to do) and try not to impose your feelings on us. When I went into the hematologist, I fully expected him to say I had nothing to worry about, but he didn't. So I am doing what is recommended to keep myself and my baby safe. That's the best any parent can do.

Anyway..back to my visit. This was the joyous week of the 1-hour glucose tolerance test. I also had my liver enzymes re-tested because they were very slightly elevated last time they were checked. I called today to find out the results of my tests, and there was mixed reviews. The good news is that my AST came down to 33 from 36. Below 30 is considered normal, so they are happy with that. The bad news is that I failed my glucose tolerance test my 2 points! I got 132, the cut-off is 130. It seems that I have a trend of just barely being outside of the normal range for almost every test that I've had. The next step is to do a 3-hour test. I have to go by the office and pick up directions for how to eat for the 3 days prior to the test, then I have to be NPO (nothing to eat or drink, even water) after midnight the night before I go in to do the test. They will do a fasting blood sugar, have me drink the solution, and then test me again every hour. If I fail this one, then I will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes. If I pass...well, then I will just be a happy camper!

Another thing that resulted from this visit was a change in my work schedule. I was talking with the doctor about the cramping and Braxton Hicks contractions that have become more frequent at work, and she decided that it was probably due to me running around so much and not resting. She then put me on restricted hours. I am no longer allowed to work more than 8 hour shifts, but she did not limit my hours per week (yay!). So I am still full time, I just have to work 4 or 5 days a week instead of 3. The bonus is that I am now on the same shift (7-3) as Joel, so we see each other A LOT more. It has been really nice to have shorter days, too. I haven't had as many contractions - yesterday I only had 3!

My no good, very bad day

Status: 24 weeks, 3 days

This is just copied and pasted from my post on TheBump.com...sorry, but I'm not really feeling up to rewriting everything. I'll try to post the last 2 week's pics tomorrow.

My Post:

I thought I was having a pretty decent day today. I should have known it would end up really crappy when I woke up at 4:30 wide awake. I finally went back to bed at 6 AM when DH got up for work, and I slept until almost 10.

Fast forward to this afternoon. Traffic was at a complete standstill on 285. It took me 45 minutes to get from 141 to St. Joseph's....that's 3 exits! It caused me to arrive exactly on time for my 3:15 appt with the hematologist.

So I originally thought that this appt would be really short and sweet. I'd tell him they wanted me to have a consult b/c of the genetic counseling and my grandmother's blood disorder, and they would tell me that since my dad is fine (that we know of), that it was an overreaction and all would be well and I would be done with this. WRONG! Instead, he told me that b/c I am preggo, it can mask whether or not I have the disorder. He said he will test me now, and unless the tests come back abnormal, we will have to keep testing until after the baby is born. I asked how often that would be, and he said at least again in July, and then sometime before my due date, depending on what this round of bloodwork says.

Then, he asked where my husband was, which I thought was a weird question. I told him at work. He told me next time I need to bring him with me b/c we need to discuss how this can effect the baby, and what we want to do about it. I almost started crying right there. Basically, he said that we will have to test the baby when he is born, and then it might complicate how his bris is handled. (ie, it may not be safe to do it at home).

On top of all this, he asked who my OB was, and I told him what practice I go to. He asked for some specific docs, so I listed off 3 or 4 that I remember, but I told him I've been seeing the midwives. He told me I was no longer allowed to see the midwives, that I am no longer an uncomplicated delivery. I was literally biting my lip trying not to cry at this point. While I was waiting for him to finish my lab slip, I called the OB office and asked to be switched to a doc for my appt tomorrow. At this point, all I wanted to do was go home. I went and had my labs drawn, and left.

Fast forward 20 min. I am pulling onto my street, and there is a large tree service truck in front of me. They pull to the right, in front of another tree service truck, so I think they are going to park there and go to pull past them. WRONG AGAIN! They were actually pulling over to make a wide turn to back into a driveway on my left. I got hit by the 3 ft front tire on my driver's side door.

I thought it would be simple. I would call the owner, get the insurance infor, and call my insurance company and theirs. WRONG AGAIN! The a$$ who owns the company accused me of tailgating the truck and hitting them! How can you tailgate with stop signs, and how can I have hit them when THEIR tire was in MY door! WTF! He refused to give me the insurance policy number without a police report. I ended up hanging up on him b/c he continued to accuse me of things that just could not have happened, and I called the cops.

40 min later....a Dunwoody officer arrived at our house and took all the info, and I have to wait until Thursday to get a police report. I called my insurance company and reported it, and told them that the other company wouldn't give me the info, and she said to call State Farm (I did get THAT MUCH out of him) and they should be able to look it up. WRONG AGAIN! They found the info, but they couldn't process a claim without knowing WHICH vehicle it was, and they wouldn't take just a license plate number. They wanted the make model and VIN. We didn't get the VIN, and the driver didn't know the make and model.

So now I have a dented car, yet another medical problem to deal with, my entire birth plan has to be changed, my blood pressure is probably through the roof, and I can't do anything about this stupid accident until at least Friday morning! Please pray for my sanity!

A little early, but not to worry!

Status: 22 weeks, 3 days

This didn't really seem to fit in my other post, so I decided to do one just for the topic - contractions.

I was at work on Saturday (22 weeks, 0 days), minding my own business, when along came 30 minutes worth of fairly frequent Braxton Hicks contractions. As a nurse, I know that this means I should rest, drink a butt-load of water, and hope to G-d they go away. Eventually they did, but my lower abdomen remained tight the rest of the evening.

I asked the perinatologist about this today, and she told me next time I need to actually go lay down (and drink water) until they go away, and if they don't go away in an hour, then I need to go home from work (or wherever). She said if I go home, and lay down for an hour and they STILL continue, I need to call my midwife.

I hope this doesn't happen again, but I am hoping that since I took a triage class I am now qualified to be a triage nurse and sit on my butt while I'm working! That would be ideal, because I really don't want to be put on bedrest!

Lookin' Good!

22 Week Pic

Today we went for our "big" ultrasound. Technically, we already had a "big" one at 17 (& 18) weeks because of our sequential screening and subsequent results (which I did not previously elaborate on here, but I can if people want me to). Anyway, it took about an hour to do the whole scan because, as usual, Tobe was being his stubborn self. He has pretty much been facing my back throughout his stay in there, and today was no exception. He was not in the mood to turn, or give the techs (yes, we went through TWO techs AND a doctor) any better view than what they had when they started. I was rolled around, they tried doing the ultrasounds on my sides, they had me get up (still gooped) and walk around, bend over, jump - nothing worked (not to be a pessimist, but I knew it wouldn't). The third person to try, one of the perinatologists, finally got decent views of his heart. She declared him perfect, with the exception of his face. they weren't able to get good views of it because of his position, so we will retry in 4 weeks.

Because of our sequential screening results, we would have to go hack in 4 weeks anyway for a growth scan. However, today he was measuring at 1lb 2 oz already!!! What a big boy! (And yes, they checked, still a boy.)

He must know I am writing about him because he is jumping around like crazy right now, although I just ate dinner so that probably had something to do with it.

Movin' on Up!

Status: 21 Weeks, 6 days

21 week Pic

Of course, I'm really late in posting this, but it's been another crazy week. On May 6, we went for our 20 week midwife appointment. Tobe was doing well, and we heard his little heart beating away at 150 bpm. In addition to the normal stuff, I was sent for blood work to rule out a liver problem causing my itching, and I was also referred to a hematologist to make sure my blood is ok since they can't be sure I don't carry any part of the Von Willebrand disease that my grandmother has. Apparently it can be passed several ways.

On a much happier note, I got several wonderful Mother's Day cards from the other moms in my life, and an especially sweet one from my husband. :-D The best gift of all, however, came around 6 PM on Mother's Day - Tobe decided to finally make his presence known and HE MOVED!!!!!

I have felt him in spurts over the last week, and I find it especially hilarious that he seems to know when I am watching or reading something about babies, and he moves. ESPECIALLY when I watch Deliver Me on Discovery Health. Joel has sort of been able to feel him once, but he hasn't been around during the really active times (usually at 1 AM after I have worked, or 6 AM right after Joel gets up for work).

That's all for now! See you next week!

No, it's not a dog......

Status: 20 weeks, 4 days

I finally got in touch with the dermatologist's office on Monday and found out that my final pathology report said my "findings were consistent with PUPPS". You can look that up, if you wish. There are some lovely pics out there that will give you an idea of what I looked like. Not pretty! I am going to ask my midwife about the meds when I go in later today...the nurse at the dermatology office didn't seem to know whether or not I should continue the whole pregnancy or what......

20 Weeks and Growing!

Status: 20 weeks, 1 day

Taken at 20 weeks, 0 days

Not really much to report right now. I called the dermatologist's office on Friday because I hadn't heard back from them. They returned my call, but said they would be closed for the day if I tried to call them back and to call Monday morning. So, I will update y'all when I find out what the second pathology report said. I will also make sure to ask about sunscreen use - I forgot to ask before we went to Callaway Gardens this weekend, and I am now burnt (although it kinda keeps my scratching down).

We have an appointment with one of the midwives on Wednesday for our 20 week check-up, but that's about all that's going on right now.....check back soon!

Just for fun.....

Status: 19 weeks, 4 days

Hooray! We are almost at the 1/2 way point on this journey they call "pregnancy". I have loved it and hated it at various stages, but it has been/is always a blessing to realize the miracle that is unfolding during this time.

We went for our re-do 3D/4D session on April 19 (at 18 weeks
, 1 day)...here are the still shots we got:
Left arm up to face

Boxing gloves - I'm up for a fight!

More boy parts...
Hand either up to mouth or in mouth - we're not sure!
Crazy scary baby!
Good profile - he face my back most of the day...cuddling with his mommy!

There goes that hand to the mouth again!

You're not nuts - this one's upside down!

Kinda looks like he's smiling in this one....

And now a view from his right side!

Back to the left....

Full body shot

There goes the hand, again!

Hope you enjoyed that sneak peek...stay tuned for more!

Oh yea, here's the 19 week photo:
